This is the second level of the Sail Canada Cruising Instructor Program.

The Clinic will take place June 7-9 at Advantage Boating. For exact start and finish times please contact Advantage Boating.

Please note that the fees for this clinic are completed in 2 instalments.

The course fee is $940 HST included. The first being an installment of $162 HST included paid to Ontario Sailing. To complete your registration you will need to pay the balance of $778 HST included to Advantage Boating.

Prerequisites / Requirements for Certification:
The candidate must:

-Be 19 years of age or older;
-Be currently registered as a Sail Canada Basic Cruising instructor
-One season and a minimum of 150 hours logged as a Sail Canada Basic Instructor;
-Advanced Cruising Standard
- VHF ROC(M) with DSC endorsement
-Logged cruising time of 17 days as skipper, minimum 3 days at a time
-
-Current nationally recognized CPR certificate
-Nationally Recognized Standard First Aid or equivalent certificate.

Ashore Knowledge:

The candidate must achieve:
- 90% on the Rules of the Road examination based on Rules 1 through 37, 40 and 45 of the Collision Regulations, and the Canadian Buoyage System.
- 90% on the Basic Coastal Navigation and Intermediate Standard Examinations
- 70% on the Intermediate Coastal Navigation Examination

Ashore Teaching Skills:

The Candidate:
Will be evaluated on ability to plan and teach a selection of performance objectives from the Ashore Knowledge section of the Intermediate Standard.

Afloat Teaching Skills:

The Candidate:

Will be evaluated on
- Ability to plan and teach a selection of Afloat Skills in the Intermediate Standard;
- Ability to handle simulated emergency situations, specifically; steering failure, engine failure in crowded harbour, taking another vessel in tow, fire fighting;
- Ability to assume total command of the vessel and its crew;
- Ability to teach, coach and evaluate students;

Will provide a course curriculum and lesson plans for a program leading to the Sail Canadad Intermediate Standard.

Must demonstrate personal traits so as to be worthy of respect as a Sail Canada Instructor specifically while living aboard a vessel.
Note: It is envisioned that this Standard be implemented in one ashore session and a minimum of one continuous 48 hour period afloat.

Certification Powers:

Start Keelboat Sailing, Basic and Intermediate Cruising Standards, provided the instructor is registered with CYA for the current year and within 36 months form the last day of an initial certification, recertification or instructor development clinic as authorized by Sail Canada.

You are expected to attend and participate in all aspects of the clinic unless previously approved by the Ontario Sailing Program Coordinator. To contact the coordinator please email ucansail@ontariosailing.ca. Failure to do so will result in a failure in the Clinic due to professionalism which is not able to be retested and therefore you will have to register and take the entire clinic again.

Please note that there is a $25 admin fee to transfer courses and there is a $50 cancellation fee up to 10 days prior to the start of the clinic. There are no refunds within 10 days or less of the start of the clinic.

I understand that photographs and videos taken of program participants, staff may be used for promotional purposes and I hereby consent to such by Ontario Sailing and Sail Canada. Prerequisites:
  • Have a restricted radiotelephone operator's certificate - maritime voluntary
  • Be currently registered as a CYA Basic Cruising instructor and have at least one season and a minimum of 150 hours logged as a CYA Basic Instructor
  • Standard First Aid
  • Signed Coach Code of Conduct
  • Have a VHF with DSC or ROC(M) Certificate
  • Current nationally recognized certificate in CPR
  • Pleasure Craft Operators Card
  • Be 19 years of age or older
  • Have achieved 90% on the Coastal Navigation and Intermediate Standard Examinations in the preceding six months
  • Have completed the Advanced Student Standard
  • Have logged cruising time of 17 days as skipper, minimum 3 days at a time
