Description: This is the second entry level in the Sail Canada Cruising Instructor Program. Successful Candidates are able to teach and certify the Introduction to Boating, Start Keelboat Sailing and Basic Cruising Standards as well as PCOC (Pleasure Craft Operator Card). At the course, you will receive intensive training in how to teach, plan lessons, and evaluate students. You will be evaluated on your practical boating and sailing skills on-water and dockside and theory knowledge through working papers as well as proctored examinations. Candidates should be current in their sailing skills and knowledge prior to entry into this clinic. The sailing evaluation demands above average basic sailing skills and there is no time during the clinic for remedial work. Working papers that should be completed prior to the clinic cover topics including , local knowledge, safety equipment and regulations, Sail Canada practices, operation and maintenance of inboard and outboard engines, the marine head, and crew overboard procedures. Proctored examinations include Rules and Buoyage, Basic Cruising and PCOC. For more information, please review the Basic Cruising Instructor standard posted on the Sail Canada website.

This clinic is limited to current Sail Canada Start Keelboat Sailing Instructors.

Prerequisites
The candidate must:
1. Be age 18 or older:
2. Have the Sail Canada Basic Cruising Standard or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of sailing skill on a keelboat up to 12 metres in length;
3. Have 2 or more years sailing experience with significant keelboat sailing experience as skipper;
5. Have Red Cross or St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid Certificate or nationally recognized equivalent and a current nationally recognized certificate in CPR level A or higher;
6. Have a PCOC card;
7. Have a VHF Restricted Operators Certificate (Maritime) with DSC endorsement;
8. Demonstrate characteristics and motivations worthy of being a Sail Canada LTC/P Instructor;
9. Demonstrate a willingness to support the goals of the Sail Canada LTC/P program.

Note: It is important that candidates be current in their sailing skills and knowledge prior to entry into Instructor clinics. The sailing evaluation demands above average basic sailing skills and there is no time during the clinic for remedial work

This clinic runs June 7 to June 9. For exact start times, please contact Whitby Yacht Club. An additional evening session may be required to complete clinic activities.

The TOTAL FEE for this clinic is $517.00 (HST included).
An INSTALLMENT of $162.00 (HST included) is paid to Ontario Sailing and the BALANCE of $355.00 (including HST) is paid to Whitby Yacht Club.
Your registration confirmation will come from programs@ontariosailing.ca and your receipt will come from sales@ontariosailing.ca. If you have not received confirmation emails from Ontario Sailing please check that your email address is correct in your profile. Also check your junk mail filter settings to ensure that emails from Ontario Sailing aren't being redirected there.

You are expected to attend and participate in all aspects of the clinic unless previously approved by the Ontario Sailing Program Coordinator. To contact the Program Coordinator please email programs@ontariosailing.ca. Failure to do so will result in a failure in the Clinic due to professionalism which is not able to be retested and therefore you will have to register and take the entire clinic again.

Ontario Sailing reserves the right to cancel any program if the minimum number of participants is not reached. In this event, applicants will be given a refund via their original method of payment. Refunds may be made for registrant withdrawals made up to 10 days prior to the start of the course; however these are subject to a $50 cancellation fee. After that date, no refunds will be issued. Registrants may transfer courses up to 10 days prior to the start of the course; however there is a $25 administration fee to transfer.

I understand that it is a condition of my participating in this program that I do so at my own risk. Therefore in consideration of my acceptance of entry into this program, I agree to save harmless and keep indemnified Ontario Sailing, the host club or organization, Sail Canada, the organizers and their respective agents, officials, servants and representatives from and against all claims, actions, costs, expenses and demands in respect to death, injury, loss or damage to my person or property, howsoever caused, arising out of or in connection with my taking part in this program, not withstanding that the same may have been contributed to or caused or occasioned by the negligence of the same bodies, or any of them, or their agents officials, servants or representatives. I further understand and agree that this release is binding upon myself, my heirs, executors and assigns. I understand that photographs and videos taken of program participants, staff may be used for promotional purposes and I hereby consent to such by Ontario Sailing and Sail Canada.
