The CANSail Community Instructor Training Clinic is designed to provide training to leaders in small communities, councillors at multi-sport camps and instructors in training who are not eligible to become CANSail 1 & 2 Instructors. Community Instructor candidates may not have a high level of technical sailing knowledge, but they are passionate about sailing and eager to develop their sailing and instructing skills. Successful completion of this course will prepare Community Instructors to better serve the sailors they will be working with. During this course participants will have an opportunity to improve their personal sailing skills and on-water instructing skills including safe use of a coach boat.

This course is NOT a prerequisite for other Instructor Training Clinic and should NOT be taken in place of the CANSail 1 & 2 Instructor Clinic.

TYPES OF CANDIDATES, PREREQUISITES & SUCCESSFUL CLINIC OUTCOMES

The Community Instructor Clinic has three possible entry points (types of candidates) and a total of five outcomes depending on your entry path and prerequisite choices.


Instructor in Training:
Is a youth who entered the system early and has completed sail training levels, but are not yet able to become a full instructor. These instructors will be expected to work with a CANSail trained or certified instructor.

Successful Clinic Outcomes: No certification power; can be involved in instruction at any level when paired with a trained or certified CANSail Instructor

Prerequisites: minimum age of 14, can sail up to a CANSail 4 level, First Aid, PCOC, Making Ethical Decisions Module & Evaluation.
Suggested Training: CANSail Fundamental Course, Sail Canada Coach Boat Safety Course

Multi-Sport Camp Counsellor:
For staff at resorts and multi-sport camps who do not have the time or qualifications to become a fully certified CANSail 1&2 instructor.

Successful Clinic Outcome 1: ICANSail Level- if the instructor has NOT completed the Coach Boat Safety or CANSail Fundamental Course, the instructor can certify the ICANSail Level.

Successful Clinic Outcome 2: CANSail 1- If the instructor HAS completed the Coach Boat Safety and CANSail Fundamental course, the instructor can certify the ICANSail and CANSail 1 Levels

Prerequisites: minimum age of 16, can sail up to a CANSail 2 level, First Aid, PCOC, Making Ethical Decisions Module & Evaluation

Community Instructor:
Community leaders and parents that do not have the required skill level or time to become a CANSail 1&2 instructor, but are interested in becoming involved and want to develop some skills to help entry level sailors.

Successful Clinic Outcome 1: I CANSail Level- if the instructor has NOT completed the CANSail Fundamental Course, the instructor can certify the ICANSail Level

Successful Clinic Outcome 2: CANSail 1- if the instructor HAS completed the CANSail Fundamental Course, the instructor can certify the ICANSail and CANSail 1 Levels

Prerequisites: minimum age of 16, can sail up to a CANSail 2 level, First Aid, PCOC, Making Ethical Decisions Module & Evaluation, Sail Canada Coach Boat Safety Course
Suggested Training (please see outcomes above): Sail Canada Coach Boat Safety Course, CANSail Fundamental Course

The price of this course is $250.00 (includes HST).

You are expected to attend and participate in all aspects of the clinic. Failure to do so will result in a failure in the Clinic due to professionalism which is not able to be retested and therefore you will have to register and take the entire clinic again.

Ontario Sailing reserves the right to cancel any program if the minimum number of participants is not reached. In this event, applicants will be given a refund via their original method of payment.

Refunds may be made for registrant withdrawals made up to 10 days prior to the start of the course; however these are subject to a $50 cancellation fee. After that date, no refunds will be issued. Registrants may transfer courses up to 10 days prior to the start of the course; however there is a $25 administration fee to transfer.

I understand that it is a condition of my participating in this program that I do so at my own risk. Therefore in consideration of my acceptance of entry into this program, I agree to save harmless and keep indemnified Ontario Sailing, the host club or organization, Sail Canada, the organizers and their respective agents, officials, servants and representatives from and against all claims, actions, costs, expenses and demands in respect to death, injury, loss or damage to my person or property, howsoever caused, arising out of or in connection with my taking part in this program, not withstanding that the same may have been contributed to or caused or occasioned by the negligence of the same bodies, or any of them, or their agents officials, servants or representatives. I further understand and agree that this release is binding upon myself, my heirs, executors and assigns. I understand that photographs and videos taken of program participants, staff may be used for promotional purposes and I hereby consent to such by Ontario Sailing.
